Phlebology / Venous Diseases

Phlebology is a medical field which comprises both the training and the therapy for vascular diseases. Among the most frequently occuring vascular changes are vein diseases of the lower extremities.

Over the course of life, signs of changes to the superficial veins will occur in almost all adults. These changes usually occur in the form of spider veins or varicose veins as clearly visible blood vessels under the skin.

While spider veins present a purely cosmetic problem, varicose veins usually accompany weakness in the veins, which hampers the transport of blood back to the heart. Circulation disorders can result which lead to blood congestion and water collection in the surrounding tissue.

If, after an in-depth preliminary examination using ultrasound, venous disorders are diagnosed, there are a variety of therapeutic measures available, such as compression therapy (support stockings), sclerotherapy (sclerosis), laser therapy or a surgical operation, depending on the diagnosis. The selection of the method of treatment depends on the type and extent of the vein alteration.

The following complaints occur most frequently:

  • Spider Veins
  • Varicose Veins (Varicosities)
  • Hemorrhoids (Vascular dilation in the anus)
